ABOUT THE CONTEXTS OF REGIONAL HISTORY...

The Sakhalin Regional Museum of Local Lore presented V. V. Scheglov's book about the island's brewing industry.

The modern history of the Sakhalin region tends to cover monumental topics, neglecting trivialities, although they contribute to a more objective and vivid picture of events that are getting farther and farther away from us every year.

Sakhalin historian Viktor Vladislavovich Shcheglov has certainly not become a hostage of this "habit". In his new book "The Sakhalin Brewing Industry" he turns to an original subject and tells the history of the formation and development of the Sakhalin brewing industry from its beginning to the third millennium. The publication was presented at the Sakhalin Regional Museum of Local Lore on March 25.

"The history of  local brewing is inextricably linked to the history of  Russian exploration of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands in the 20th century. At times when the territory of the islands became the object of large-scale resettlement activities, the availability of the industry product - beer - or its absence on sale showed the people who came to live and work on Sakhalin (among other indicators) how successfully everyday life was established, how far the development of social infrastructure had progressed" - the author writes.

At the presentation, Victor Vladislavovich introduced guests to the contents of the book and shared the difficulties he encountered in collecting the material. This is mainly due to the specificity of the topic and as a consequence - a scarce set of sources. Nevertheless, readers will find in the publication statistical summaries and illustrations, accompanied by a detailed analysis of each stage of the formation of the island brewing as a context of political, economic and social events.
